What Is Chinese Blue Calico?
Chinese blue calico is not normally created by painting white designs on finished blue cloth. In its representative traditional process, the maker first protects selected areas of pale fabric with paste. Indigo colors the unprotected fibers; the pasted areas remain substantially undyed. Scraping and washing away the paste reveals the design.
The word “printing” refers to the stencil and resist paste establishing the pattern. “Dyeing” refers to the indigo coloring the exposed cloth. The two actions are inseparable. Nantong Blue Calico Printing and Dyeing Technique was included in China’s first national list of representative intangible cultural heritage projects in 2006. The official entry identifies it as traditional craftsmanship, project number VIII-24, with the Nantong Blue Calico Art Museum as the safeguarding unit. Contemporary makers may work with linen, silk, or mixed fibers, but the fiber should be identified rather than inferred from appearance.
Indigo
Indigo is the source of the characteristic blue in traditional practice. A workable indigo vat keeps the colorant in a form that can enter the fiber. After the cloth is removed and exposed to air, oxidation develops the familiar blue. Repeated dipping and airing can gradually deepen the tone.
Resist paste
Traditional accounts repeatedly mention a paste made from soybean flour, lime, and water. How Is Chinese Blue Calico Made?
Names and details vary by region and workshop. The following sequence explains the shared logic of stencil-paste resist and indigo dyeing rather than imposing one universal recipe.
- Select and prepare the cloth. Wash or scour pale cloth so it is clean, absorbent, and free of interfering finish.
- Design the pattern. Plan central motifs, borders, repeats, and the bridges required to keep a stencil stable.
- Laminate and cut the stencil. Transfer the drawing to prepared paper, then use knives and punches to open the design. Oil treatment may strengthen the finished stencil.
- Mix the resist paste. Prepare a smooth paste with the thickness needed for the stencil, cloth, and weather.
- Register and apply the paste. Place the stencil flat and draw paste across it with even pressure. Align successive placements so the repeat connects correctly.
- Dry the pasted cloth. Allow the resist to set before the cloth enters the vat.
- Dip and oxidize. Immerse the cloth, remove it, expose it to air, and repeat according to the desired shade and workshop method.
- Dry and remove the paste. Scrape away the hardened resist after dyeing.
- Rinse, dry, and finish. Wash out remaining paste and loose color, hang the cloth, and complete any rolling, pressing, or other local finishing.

Blue Ground, White Ground, and Natural Crackle
Two broad formats are commonly discussed: white motifs on a blue ground, and blue motifs on a white ground. White-on-blue designs often feel dense and grounded because the indigo surrounds the reserved shapes. Blue-on-white designs can appear lighter and more open. The stencil relationship changes between them; one should not assume that the second is simply a digital color reversal of the first.
As resist paste dries and the cloth moves through dyeing and airing, fine cracks may form. A small amount of dye can enter these openings, leaving irregular blue lines after the paste is removed. These are often called “ice-crackle” marks. Technique also shapes style. A paper stencil must remain connected, and paste must pass cleanly through its openings. Blue calico was historically valued as useful cloth. Handmade does not mean defect-free, and a machine-made product is not automatically unusable. The central issue is whether materials, process, origin, and value are described honestly.
How to Wash and Store Blue Calico
Always follow the maker’s permanent care label first. Indigo-dyed textiles can release loose surface color, especially when new, and mixed materials may require special treatment.
- Wash separately from pale items, using cool water and a mild neutral detergent if washing is permitted.
- Avoid chlorine bleach, strong alkaline cleaners, prolonged soaking, aggressive scrubbing, twisting, and high heat.
- Dry in shade with good airflow; repeated intense sunlight can fade dyes and weaken fibers.

The national heritage record notes declining numbers of practitioners and the pressure of automated or semi-automated production. Nantong institutions have collected historic textiles and images, organized pattern research, and developed new products. Tongxiang has also brought the technique into sustained school programs.
